We have seen a rise in videogames that use the creation of content in game as their main mode. While there are books that have looked at a variety of aspects of these games, it is important to examine the potential ways to make money that arise from their environment. Through our ongoing ethnographic research, we became aware of an active market for commissions within the Minecraft creative community. GETSPOUT Our findings highlight the 3 main actors that constitute this market: the customers, who own Minecraft servers and the contractors who manage the client's orders of Minecraft maps and the developers who are responsible for the creation of these maps. Our research has shown that the product in question is not in-game content as one might expect, but rather the service of creating it. The findings suggest that the current structure of Minecraft is influenced by commissioning, a well-organised process initiated and sustained only by the community of the game.
