The rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar was both highly praised and reviled on its first appearance. A signature element of its presentation of the story of Jesus was a look at the personal psychology of those who took part in the events leading up to his crucifixion and resurrection. One of the most controversial portrayals was that of Mary Magdalene and her unrequited love for Jesus. "I Don't Know How to Love Him" powerfully presents her personal confusion in understanding her attraction to Jesus.

As believers continue to sing it annually, the history of this song reminds us that we have a God who came down to a broken and sinful world, and who throughout the ages meets individuals from every kind of hardship with true empathy. Though Easter celebrations focus primarily on the last days of Jesus’ time on earth, it would be remiss of us to skip over the work that He did during His three years of ministry prior to the crucifixion. Easter has the potential to be a lovely time of renewal and restoration as we focus on our Lord’s sacrifice for us.

It also sounds so very unlike Depeche Mode, with its powering Blues riff, domination by lead guitar and drums and overall rock ambiance.
