SIM lock:

A SIM-Lock, network lock, CARRIER LOCK, imei-lock or (MASTER) SUBSIDY lock serves as a technical limit built into CDMA and GSM cell phones by manufacturers for use by service providers to limit the usage of these phones to a particular locations and/or networks. This is in comparison with a phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) which doesn't enforce any SIM restrictions.

Most mobile devices can be unlocked to work with any GSM mobile phone network provider, but the phone might still show the original logos and may not support popular features of the new carrier. Apart from the locking, smartphones might also have firmware attached to them which is specific to the network provider. This firmware is installed through the service provider which is separate from the locking mechanism. Virtually all cell phones can be unbranded by re-flashing a different firmware version, a process suited to advanced users only.

Unlocking Technology:

A handset can be unlocked simply by entering a code provided by the service operator. Different mechanisms include software working on the handset or a computer connected to the device, hardware devices that link to the handset or over-the-air by the service provider. Most of the time the unlock process is permanent. The code needed to do away with all locks from a cell phone is called the master code, network code key, or multi-lock code. If the device is carrier locked it will usually show one of the following messages: SIM network PIN blocked, Enter lock PIN.

Economics:

In many cases a SIM-locked smartphone is offered for sale at a noticeably cheaper cost than an unlocked one due to the fact that the service provider expects income thru its service. SIM locks are employed on inexpensive (pay-as-you-go) devices, though deals on more pricey handsets need a subscription that delivers guaranteed income. Unlocked mobile phones have a better market value.

Unlocking Services:

Some businesses provide a permanent unlocking service . This service requires individuals that need to unlock a handset to provide their IMEI number to a unlocking company and frequently they will also require the country and cellular network the mobile is locked to, often sent by email or submitted on their web-site. The company then will provide (at a cost to you) an unlock code for the phone.

Unlocking Service Providers:

Unfortunately there are a huge number of dodgy sites working in the cell phone IMEI unlocking industry. As a consequence it is prudent to be sure you use a reliable service provider for this service. Do your due diligence and investigate every potential retailers before committing to making an order.
