Origins: Ayurvedic therapy is based upon ancient Indian Ayurvedic medicine. The manipulation of pressure point points was used to heal the body. The word Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word: ayurved, meaning knowledge, and vedas, meaning wisdom. The literal and spiritual meanings of Ayurvedic Massage are derived from Ayurvedic philosophy, practice and tradition as passed down from ancient India.

Ayurvedic massage techniques rely on the understanding that the life force 'Pran' flows through all living creatures. If you were to look inside yourself (which you can't when you are dead), you would find your life force called 'Rakta'. This force is said to be connected to the center of the earth, known as 'Nishtha'; to the Sun or Moon, situated at the very center of the earth; and to the North Star, which is also called'Polaris'. The 'Pran' that flows through our bodies makes us healthier. It isn't flowing correctly and causes us to feel sick, which can lead to premature aging of our skin.

Ayurvedic Massage follows the same principle as Indian medicine. The aim is to boost the flow and balance the 'Rakta'. It has similar benefits in stress management, lowering blood pressure, and reducing stress. There are many types of massage, each designed to address a specific problem such as the neck or shoulders, feet, back, or feet. Ayurvedic massage may include the following:

carrier oils. Carrier oils are essential oils that help to give the massage its body penetrating power. Soybean oil, coconut oil and almond oil are all examples of carrier oils. These oils allow the massage therapists easy access to the patient's skin. Carrier oils should not be applied to sensitive skin. Use your sense of judgement to make sure the carrier oil you select suits your needs.

Different types of herbs. Ayurvedic massages employ a wide range of herbs. They are selected for their healing effects and medicinal properties. Kapha - The ability of this herb to calm and soothe both the mind as well as the body is well-known. Kapha has many chemical branches, including saponins. Before beginning massage therapy, Kapha oils can be massaged into the scalp. Kapha oils can also be used as a poultice for sunburned skin, wounds or rashes.

Tulsi – This herb has been used for years in Ayurvedic medicine, to regulate mood and alleviate stress. Tulsi oils are often added during a massage therapy session to enhance relaxation and ease stress. Tulsi stimulates blood flow and increases heart rate. Tulsi may be beneficial in lowering blood pressure, stress reduction, and other areas. A significant reduction in stress related disorders has been reported in people that have Tulsi oil massaged into their scalp.

Massage therapists may use gentle strokes on the neck, shoulders, and face to stimulate the lymphatics. The lymphatic system is often relieved by adding oils like peppermint, Chamomile or lavender to massage oils. Massaging with a blend of oils can also improve lymphatic drainage which allows the lymphatic system to carry waste products away from the body.

Deep tissue massage. This massage is designed to relieve tension and stress in the muscles and connective tissue. This type of massage is designed to restore youthful skin appearance, increase flexibility, range and motion, and decrease swelling. It uses massage strokes that include: gentle strokes, kneading, tapping, squeezing, and tapping movements.
