The movie itself, I found was fairly overrated. However, Jennifer Lawrence in Winter's Bone did an absolutely wonderful job of playing the role of Ree Dolly. If not for her, the entire movie would have been a wash. Before this, I had only seen her in 'The Bill Engvall Show' where she plays the typical cliche ditzy teenage girl. Which, honestly, there are a million and one girls in the nation that could pull that off. Watching her go from that ditzy teenager to this gritty and convincing performance was definitely a treat for me and showed me her worth. For that, she receives my Breakout Performance of the Year award.
This success was enough to convince me that making money as an indie filmmaker is no longer about the BIG pay day. These days filmmakers need to create good work, find their target audience and focus on selling movies consistently over time. As a result, I now believe the modern moviemaking model is to eventually create multiple streams of movie income.
The wicked Queen of hearts is played by Helena Bonham Carter in this movie. There is a Queen of Hearts doll available which resembles the actress. She has heart shaped lips, large forehead with bright red heart shaped hair with a small gold crown on top.
